Don't Get Rolled Over on Gulf Bookings in Late October

2026-10

Last Wednesday a home-goods client booked space from Shekou to Jebel Ali for Oct 28. Today the forwarder called: rolled to Nov 6. He asked what to do. I said, first check whether White Friday is still reachable.

Late October is the tightest window on Middle East lanes. Carriers protect long-term contract customers first. My estimate is that 15-20% of small shippers get rolled. There aren't many vessels on this route to begin with. Red Sea diversions add 7-10 days each way. Once schedules slip, empty boxes don't come back, and the next sailing is oversold too.

Think of it as buying a high-speed rail ticket during Golden Week. You have a seat, but the train is over capacity, and the inspector lets VIPs on first.

My experience: ship after Oct 31 and Jebel Ali takes 28-32 days, plus 3-5 days for clearance. White Friday (Nov 27) cargo probably won't make it. If you must ship, do three things: book 14 days ahead; pay $150-300 per container for "guaranteed space"; line up Khalifa Port or Dammam as a backup instead of fighting for Jebel Ali.

The safer play is air freight for bestsellers. Guangzhou to Riyadh is $4.5-6.5/kg, 5-7 days. Expensive, but better than going out of stock. I know sellers who switched in mid-October. Freight ate 8% of gross margin, but they didn't miss White Friday.

Frankly, betting on ocean in late October is gambling with your White Friday revenue. So — are you gambling or calculating this year?
