A home-goods seller called me last week. One parcel to Riyadh got re-billed 1,200 SAR. Not lost cargo — a dimension re-check.
The scanner on the sorting line disagreed with the size he declared. Happens constantly in peak season. From October, several UAE and Saudi couriers tightened their auto-measurement tolerance; a 2cm gap on any side can trigger a recalculation.
Say you declare 40×30×20 cm and the machine reads 42×32×22. Volumetric weight jumps 15–20%. Multiply that by a 3–8 AED per kilo peak surcharge and your margin is gone.
Three things work for me. First, measure the bulkiest side yourself with a tape, not the product's net dimensions. Second, for soft packs and woven bags, leave 3cm of slack. Third, put the dispute clause in your contract — many couriers only accept claims within 7 days.
One more trap: bundle several parcels into one shipment and weight adds up, but volumetric weight is calculated on the outer box. Splitting sometimes costs less. Your rep at 8ship will flag the gap, but you still have to measure it right.
Q4 capacity is tight enough. Don't pay tuition on billable weight. Have you been hit with a re-weigh charge yet?
