Saudi customs held up a batch of battery-containing shipments this month. One of my clients' full container sat at Jeddah port for an extra 11 days. The problem wasn't the batteries themselves. The lab report showed a capacity reading that didn't match the actual goods, and the digital scan flagged it before anyone could explain.
The stricter checks started on July 1 at Jeddah as a pilot, and August enforcement has tightened further. Customs now wants the mAh figures on the UN38.3 report, the SDS, and the commercial invoice to line up exactly. One mismatch gets the consignment rejected. Re-testing takes 7-10 days.
In my experience, the August heat is making carriers extra careful too. For LCL battery shipments over 25kg per consignment, COSCO and MSC move the cargo into dangerous-goods slots, and the freight cost jumps to roughly 1.8x the normal rate. Air freight is even worse: Saudi Airlines' battery surcharge went from 5.5 RMB/kg last year to 8.2 RMB/kg now. If you're paying less, your freight forwarder is probably cutting a corner somewhere.
To be honest, if you sell fashion or home goods, you can relax. But if you're shipping power banks, electric toothbrushes, or portable fans — summer bestsellers — prepare UN38.3, SDS, MSDS, and MOPA approval before you place the order. MOPA applications need at least 20 working days of buffer; don't trust a forwarder who promises one week. The same logic applies to LED lamps and small appliances with technical specs, where customs asks for matching model numbers and rated power.
Here's another trap that catches sellers repeatedly: Saudi requires the consignee name to match the P.O. Box on the invoice. Since August, parcels without a registered box number get delayed at the last mile. Break the address into country, city, postcode, building number, and P.O. Box, then verify each field before dispatch. On last month's UAE runs, 9% of failed deliveries were caused by a missing building number, not a wrong city name.
